2.8L, 2.3L Trannys

I am curious as to wether or not the 2.8 and 2.3 use the same 4spd, I have the 2.8L now but really want to get rid of it and possibly go with the 2.3L,
and another note the bad compression on cyl 2-3 was due to a chunk of EXH valve missing and the 2 cyl @ 60psi needed to be reground, I am going to do a factory repair and only due the 2-3 cyl as I really do not want to spend a ton of bucks on what appears to be a dead horse type engine.

If you have the Mitsubishi or Toyo Koygo transmission, then you'll be able to take the bellhousing off and that means the trannys are swappable.


The transmissions will not interchange without changing the bell/clutch housing.

(I think it sucks horribly that the M5OD doesn't have a removeable housing.)

why? an M5OD out of a newer 2.3 truck will bolt to an older 2.3.

He could if he had an M5OD to use, and he doesn't need to spend the money on a new one. He already has the 2.8 tranny (TK5 or Mitsu) that he'd like to keep. I was getting at the bolt pattern that mounts the bellhousing to the transmission being the same. The 2.3 and 2.8 do NOT use the same bellhousing.

It's no problem, but you over thought what I was saying.


I know that any 2.3 bellhousing pattern can be used, but I only stated that I think it sucks that I can't choose to put a different bellhousing on my transmission. I like to have the external slave cylinder, but there's no chance of that with the M5OD.

Thanks guys, The 2.8 is like again a dead horse and I am familier with the 2.3 as we have raced this motor and a lot of speed parts are available to wake it up, well time for pick a part shopping.
