2.8 to 4.0 fuel problems

okay i see where we went wrong im putting a 4.0 into the truck

That helps me out. Going back to your first post, you will need the computer and all of its wiring harness, components, etc... to run everything including the motor. But ya I think you can put a 4.0 liter in the truck with on problems. But the fuel pressure needed for the 4.0 liter is greater then that of an 86 fuel pump can put out. From what I've read the 86 fuel pump puts out 44psi and the explorer fuel pump puts out 75-90 psi.

do you know if the 93 xploder sending unit will fit into the 85 tank

No they wont. The 93 explorer sending unit has a bigger top to it. The 85 is much small plus I think the tank depth's are different. They are both held to the tanks in different ways. And a 2.9 liter sending unit wont work on the 85 tank either...to big of a top. You need to get a fuel tank from a gen. 2 ranger. They fit under a gen. 1 ranger just fine (be sure to check your drive shaft clearence if you do so).

Here it is in a gen. 1 ranger (we later took it out...didn't get the TBI to work on the 2.8 quite right).

Note how the sending unit and how it stays attached. Might be some bed clearances with the sending unit (never got the bed on the truck).

Also the filler necks on the gen. 1 are smaller in diameter then the gen. 2. Be sure to get the filler neck for the plastic tanks when you get it (if you do). they run about $100!!!
