2.8 to 4.0 fuel problems

i have the sending unit from the 93 exploder and from an 86 ranger i just want to know how do i wire up the fuel system from the 2.8 carbed to the 4.0 efi

The explorer sending unit isn't exactly helpful....

Nor would the fuel sender unit from a newer standard cab ranger,
the newer rangers ('89-97) all have plastic fuel tanks.

what you need is a high pressure pump, and thought hte explorer has one...

Frankly I'd do the modifications necissary to use the plastic tank
from an '89-94 AND all the fuel lines from a truck with the same
bed length/Wheelbase as your project

because that way it not only has the proper pump but lines that connect
directly to the 4.0 engine

well i have the explorer tank but that is way to wide but what your saying is that a tank off of an newer ranger will work

A plastic tank off a newer ranger will fit on an older ranger with a metal tank but it took my dad and I some time to make the fuel tank straps work. But we never got the bed on the truck because the TBI we put on his 2.8 was giving us problems. When we had the plastic tank on the sending unit on it looked like it might hit the underside of the bed. Plus the filler neck hoses on the plastic tanks are differnent then the ones one the metal. The plasic tanks have a larger diameter hose on them. Plus when the plastic tank only had a quarter-tank of fuel, the gas guage in his 84 ranger read that it had three-quarters of a tank.

yea i know what your saying but i figured it out im getting a good looking metal take out of the yard and use a 86 efi sending unit and the exploder fuel lines

okay new question how am i going to plug in the 86' sending unit when it has three wires and the 85' has two wires

Find out what the 85 wires do and what the 86 wires do. A manual should tell you.

Ya you should be able to splice them in. The plastic tank that my dad and I put in had 4 wires and we only had 2. Two were for the gas guage and two were for the fuel pump which we had to run wires for. But dont mess up your wires.

so you just ran wires from the wiring harness to the fuel pump

Ya, hooked the the computer to a relay switch and then ran new wires from the power sorce to the relay then to the fuel pump. We didnt use the inerta switch though (we had problem with them).

will the system work with out the interia switch

It will, all it is is one wiring going into a switch and the same wire coming out of it. All the switch does is allow power to flow through the wire. The switch is attached to the power wire of the pump. If the inerta switch is triggered, it turns the power off to the pump(s). I've read stories off the inerta switch failing on people while driving. But its also there for safty too. But from what I just read though you are putting the electric full pump and tank in a truck that is carbureted. If this is so, you will need a fuel pressure regulater and return line on it then. If you dont you will have problems fast!!!!

yea i know i have all the line off the xploder and the 86 tank with the exploder sending unit in it im almost positive it will work

But Im just worried about your fuel pressure. I think the pressure on the 86's is 44psi of pressure, way to much for a carbureted vehicle. Now I understand if you are putting the TBI unit off a 84 thunder bird with a 3.8 liter on to your 2.8, then you will be okay (btw thats what im going to be doing to my ranger after i put my 2.8 in it). I didnt know that they made explorers in 86!!! But a plastic explorers tank wont fit under a ranger, its to wide. But a metal tank of an 86 ranger will, or a gen. 2 ranger with plastic tank will also but the pressure from those gen. 2 pumps are much higher!!!
