If it is stock, there is some information in front of the radiator that has the timing info, seems like it is 14* on '85's but not sure. What ever the case, highlight it on the pully un-hook the spout wire at the distributor and check timing adjust as required. Plug the spout back in and go....
yea but doesnt it have to be atleast running to use a timing light? it wont get running yet. easyest way to get it to top dead center i guess then just turn rotor to #1 cylinder ?
Yeah, what you said.
Get #1 TDC and set distriduter so rotor is pointing at or just before #1.
If it doesn't start (or even try) you may have to turn it 180 degrees.
If you have the valve cover off on #1 side, you can turn it over until the intake valve (on #1 Cylinder) is closing and line up the timing mark as it comes up to the pointer. This way you know you're at TDC on the right cycle.
Seems like I'm always off 180 degrees the 1st try.
With the spark plug removed, you can tell when you are on compression. Look at where the the rotor points, use that as number one. You now have TDC and the #1 plug terminal.
