2.5 hesitating

I just got a new to me '98 with the 2.5, 2wd 5 speed. Got 75k miles on it. Runs great, idles fine, starts right up. Sporatically it will just die, but not completely while driving. Will still go back to idle fine. But will just randomly not work with any gas. I'd drive it most the afternoon, then it starts acting up. Let it sit and it works fine again. No engine light comes on.

I'm just a bit confused as there doesn't seem to be any obvious reason. There was a small animal nest in the airbox, cleaned out and new air filter. There is a new fuel filter. Only thing left I can think of is an electrical short. There are some cracked wires going to the MAF.

Any and all help will be much appreciated, I love my new truck, just wish I could drive it without issues.

UPDATE: seems to be the air flow sensor. Won't run with the gas pedal pushed, but unplug the sensor and it seems to work fine.

Tried the cleaning and doesn't seem to help.

Do I need a new MAF? Is that a common problem?

maybe u need a MAF, those things happen, not necesary to be common
