This spring I bought an 88 ranger STX missing the motor. It came with a 2.3L engine and I had to swap out new engine brackets to match my rubber engine mounts (the ones on the "new" 2.3 had square rubber isolators built in.) Both engines are fuel injected and everything matches up - minus the fuel injector connector and two other emission control connectors. My truck's wiring harness is either a 3 or 4 pin connection and the new engine has a couple of connectors with 8 pin. So, I'm trying to figure out how to find out if this is an engine from a later model, or maybe this was out of some other vehicle? I'm not sure but I'm checking engine code numbers right now to see of it is a later model year.

I hope to find the right connectors or maybe swap out the intake manifold I have for one with the right connectors. That would be easy as I have the intake off right now.

Has anyone else run into this. Thanks.

i ran into this problem with my 4.0 and i was just gonna splice the wires and make it work. but then, i realized that the old motor didnt have half the stuff hooked up. so i hooked up what i could and it ran fine. every thing that wasnt hooked up must not have matterd it never threw any codes or gave me any problems. and i still dont know what the unhooked up stuff was
