2.0 carb options ???

What year model was this?

My original Ranger was an 88 Standard cab with a 2.0 carbed engine.

Actually, now that I think about it...not sure if I swapped the head out before or after the 78 mustang intake and carb...but I did put the 2.3 head onto the 2.0 block before finally swapping out the 2.3 short block and having the head rebuilt...it's been over 4 years since this happened so the timing of some events is a bit fuzzy...

Still have the same intake and carb though...and it was working great up until recently...

Edit: I should say it was working great the last time I drove the truck...since putting it back together there have been issues...mostly from my frazzled memory...lol!

OK, understood...just trying to suggest using the same setup for both if possible to save some $$$...you can use the lower intake and holley with the 2.0 even with the mismatch...

I ran the 2.3 carb (Motorcraft 5200) and intake on my 2.0 for a while and it actually ran much better (but I used the D-port head and not the 2.0 head)...the 2.0 carb and emissions setup is difficult to get working porperly (or was with mine because half the parts were missing when I got it)...

Hope you find a workable solution though...I'm sure the 2.5 will give you much better grunt and overall performance than the 2.0 once you get it all working properly...

hmmm... that sounds like its worth a try! i had trouble on the way home this evening, it wouldnt run on the primaries i had to stay in the throttle (secondaries) to keep it running. :shout: the fuelie intake i have came off a friends race car, so the injector holes are already welded up, and this thing has been HOGGED OUT!

so you are saying the 2.3 efi intake will bolt on the 2.0 head, even though it will have a slight port mismatch? correct?

The D-port intake will work but it is not recommended...I retracted that statement due to not knowing the details from four years ago...but bolting the head on will work and then you can use the lower intake from an 86 FI model and then an adaptor with the 350 holley...if you want to make changes now until the other engine is ready...if the head is rebuilt already it won't hurt to bolt it on the 2.0 (but it is a shame to waste a $35 gasket)...

I may have used the D-port intake for a while before swapping the head, but I do recall having the head rebuilt and aquiring a new intake...just not sure what came first...

I also tried to run the one-barrel on the 2.0 intake and that actually worked good...except the one-barrel carb used a different electronic system and I could not get it to idle...I drove it to work because it was mid-week and it ran like a champ on the highway...fortunately almost my entire drive was highway back then...when I got to a stop light I had to keep reving it to keep it running...

But there were many changes back then and finally I found the 5200 carb and intake and that worked great for about two years...

The 5200 carb, will it fit on my 2.0 intake? Surely those would be easy to find and fairly cheap.

It might, actually, because there is an adaptor plate on mine that allows it to sit on the intake that I have (and that one looks like it might take a Holley 350 carb using the outside bolts)...if you can measure the distance between the four bolts I can measure mine...if it's exact then it will fit, but IIRC there is another plate on the bottom inside but it should clear the 2.0 hole (or you may have to do a minor mod)...

Just a sec...running out to garage...

Back! OK...1 13/16 x 3 15/16 to the center of the four hold down bolts...

I'll get mine off tomorrow afternoon and take some measurements. Thanks for the info.

If you are dealing with a 1 bbl carb like the motocraft on my 84 2.3 , I have set a Rod. Monojet carb from a 71 Chevy Nova right on the intake of the 2.3 and it bolts right up the bores even look the same size, I havnt tried this yet so I'm not sure of the jetting, but youll get rid of all the xtra garb on from the late model carb. Carb adapter spacers are easy to make if you have a drill press, out of alum. or phenolic, I've even seen made out of plywood that lasted for years(poor folks have poor ways)

Phenolic is good and the one on the original 2.0 carb might work...if it's not the exact size...just make sure to plug any extra holes if they become necessary...

BTW, the bottom spacer on the 2.0 carb is phenolic (whatever that is)...

i give up! im going to pull-a-part this weekend comming up, to find a n/a 2.3 efi 4 plug motor, gonna get a 2 bbl adapter, and be done with this!

i let myself get distracted from the goal... make it reliable, period! i cant afford to put a bunch of money in it 'till i finish my BroncoII project.

Haven't had a chance to take the carb off, but best I can measure with it on is 2 1/16 x 4 1/2.

Well, sorry about the confusion...putting a 2.3 in it is a good start (unless the 2.5 is ready soon)...don't worry too much about whether the engine is FI or carbed because they are the same for the most part...you can carb a FI engine...just may not be able to use the manual fuel pump. The 2.3 short block that I have in my truck now is from an 87 Ranger that was FI...did not allow for manual fuel pump, but everything else was fine. I put in an electric fuel pump and it ran good with that (5.5-9 PSI).
