2.0/2.3 interchangeable?

From the tech thread, it looks like the 2.0 and 2.3 are related. Will they bold up to the same transmission and interchange? The brother-in-law has a dead 2.0 in an 86 Ranger. I have found a 2.3 to bolt in. How much trouble is it to change over? Any issues or traps? Thanks.

the motors are identical. the 2.3 is a bored out 2.0, i think the heads are different internally, thats it. it should be a direct swap.
