Hi all, i am new and have searched but did not find the answer to my question.

1st i have a 1999 ranger 3.0 5speed that i am about to swap with a 5.0 auto out of a 1998 explorer. I understand i need to mod or swap the fuel rail with a 1999 explorer because of the return line on the 1998 but not the ranger.

2nd is the vss difference between the two. i understand the 1999 explorer was the same as the ranger and did not need changed, so can i mod the harness from the 1998 or if i buy just the ecm from a 1999? or whole engine harness plus the ecm?

the only information i have seen here and other places tell me this will be a problem but offer no walk through write ups on dealing with these two years.

Any light would be really great. even just a link to the information if i missed it. as soon as i start the tear down i will keep track and try my hand at a build thread.:icon_thumby:

bummed out

So no response. no direction? hummmmm. will wait a while longer.

My advice, since this is a topic I am unfamiliar with, is to send a private message to RangerSVT and see if he can shed some light on the matter. He is the resident expert on the matter of the 5.0 swap in the late 90's trucks.

No hands on with your mix, but both your Ranger and Explorer doner use different speed systems. Your ranger get's its signal from the transmission, the Explorer from the ABS system. You'll probably need to mod your existing ABS system with both the Explorer ABS module and it's g-force transducer to get a working speed signal.

The fuel is going to bite, hard. The non-return (well, fuel return at the filter) vs the return system at the rail run different fuel pressures.

If you run an earlier "return and pressure regulator" at the fuel rail ECU with the non-return rail and the regulator in the tank, you'll way way over fuel the engine. Not good.

You'd be better off converting the system to a return one and pulling the regulator from inside the tank. Other option is the fuel rail, ECU and injectors from a returnless 5.0

You have a couple options. The best is source 99-01 fuel rails, engine harness, ecu and injectors...
The 98 is a bastard year as its return style fuel system, first year for pats, has the 3 wire cps (cam position sensor) and the older style EV1 injectors (the last two not a big deal, but info for parts swapping). 99-01 use returnless fuel, pats, 2 wire cps, and the newer EV6 injectors. The wiring end is almost plug n play for the engine, short of a couple wires that need repinning. The pats will need to addressed by installing parts from the donor, or be deleted via a tune. Follow my sport trac swap, first post, that'll be close to, but not exactly, what needs to be done...

I've installed a 96 explorer into my 99 ranger. I installed a return line. Because most junk yard won't part with just the rail. I've looked on eBay with no luck but, what I did was got the fuel line connector to barb fitting from rockauto. Ran a rubber fuel rated line that would be easy to repair if rotted, drilled and tapped a special a/n fitting for a gas tank( bough online ) to barn fitting and left it at that. I know my fuel pump puts more psi than the 5.0 needed so whatever it didn't need returned back to the tank.

As for the vss I just used the stock gauge cluster disconnected the lights for the 4x4 and 4low and the theft light I kept out. For some reason I couldn't get the 96 gauge cluster to move the speedo needle or odometer

thank you

i will shoot a pm and thank you for all your info everyone. i will try to order a harness and stuff for a 99 and start the swap this weekend. will post a build thread to keep track and hopefully help others.:icon_hornsup:

Forgot to add, at least on the early 2000's 2.5l Rangers, the GEM in the dash does the honors for speed. I've read that it's possible to use the 2.5L GEM with only a few electrical mods to get it to drive the speedometer etc.

The 98~00 Ranger gets its raw speed signal from the rear ABS sensor. RABS trucks make the conversion to a speedometer-compatible VSS signal in the GEM; 4WABS trucks do the same in the 4WABS Module. So, if the original 99 Ranger speedometer system has not been altered, it will work with an Ex 5.0 swap, no mods necessary.

This is only needed/done on select 01+ rangers...
