Ok my Dad has a 1996 Ranger with the 3.0 in it. He says that when he first starts it up in the morning theres a dull thump sound coming from the engine compartment. Does it one time and then goes away.
It runs fine and for the rest of the day it doesnt make this noise. Has anyone else heard of this or had this problem with their vehicles?

Thanks
Carey

Not me... sorry. But would really appreciate if you could elavorate more on this particular "thump" so that we can imagine a little more on this.

Have you tried pulling the codes and see if anything comes up?

There once was a cat here that liked to crawl in the engine compartment to keep warm with the block heater, but it only went thump the once, then went splat, needless to say that was the end of both the thump and cat we should call clunk.

LOL well its no cat unfortunately. I havent heard it myself, I know its hard to diagnose a sound, even worse when you cant hear it for yourself, I was just checking to see if maybe this might be something common with the 3.0. I appreciate the help.

what kind of oil filter is on the engine?

sounds like the oil is draining out when it sits over night, and the result is a dry start.

or the bearings are just worn out
