my buddy just purchased a 95 ranger and the front brakes do not work at all. the rears do all the braking (not very good) and lock up very easily. it has a very weak pedal. i do know that almost all the braking components have been replace recently. to me it seems like a poorly done bled job. it seems like when the new master was installed it was not bench bled. I was going to try a gravity bleed to see if theres any change but i wanted to see if anyone else had another idea. I did look at a master cylinder of 98 ranger and i noticed that it had some kind of unit with a plug mounted on the drivers side inner fender that the 95 did not have. the unit had a brake line entering and exiting with a plug in the center and im not sure what the unit is or what it is called. any ideas

I would suggest that you may have a faulty metering valve. This device delays the immediate pressurizing of the front disc brakes long enough for the rear shoes to make contact with their drums. On some models this device is coupled with another valve known as the proportioning valve which affects rear brake application.

do you know where the metering valve would be? could it be possible the metering valve is the unit i was describing in the first thread?

Sorry, but I cannot identify the exact location on your year/model. However, logically speaking, it must on the hydraulic circuit that feeds the front brakes.

I know this is gonna sound like the dumbest thing ever, but check it anyway, because I have seen to many sand-lot mechanics and back-yard boys do this.

Make sure the calipers aren't on upside down. The bleeder screws need to be at the top.

I saw one brought in to the shop I was working at once, guy has crappy pedal and no front brakes. The guy working on it spent an hour bleeding and puzzling before someone came up and pointed out that the calipers were upside down. If the bleeder isn't at the top, you never get all the air out.

Get a vacuum pump its nto necessary but helps out a little when bleeding brakes by yourself.
