1994 Ranger I may buy

If you're used to driving a 2.3 then a 3.0 will be fun.

If you're used to driving a 4.0 then a 3.0 will NOT have the bottom end torque you're used to.

I drove a 2.3 as a dd. It had 4.10's and 31's. Not very fast, but did get 25mpg on a good day.....23mpg on average.

I've got the B3000 now. Only diff is it's 3.0, ext. cab, and 235's. The 3.0 has a bump in power and follows just about the same powerband as the 2.3. I know I could easily out accelerate and pull my 2.3 4x4.

That said, I like the 22.5 highway MPG i get with my 3.0/5spd combo and it's not even in top running condition. It needs an alignment and some tweaks to the engine. May be able to bump to a little over 23 or maybe even 24. The main thing with a 3.0 is low gears and let the thing build rpm's before shifting and to keep it right about 3k-3.2k when cruising, anything below that and it'll suck gas.

Oh, and it very easy to work on and just about damn near indestructable.

Pretty expensive brake repair.

I am sick and tired of putting good money into a 20 year old truck which has a body that is beginning to rust to hell, the paint is chipping off the hood in most spots and is also in need of a timing chain replacement.

If I tried to sell my B2 right now, what would I get $1000 tops? If the person who bought it was an idiot. Why should I keep dumping money into something that is not worth a sh!t. Literally.

I know you always say skip the payment, fix what you got... But there has to be a time when a person just says, look, the thing ain't worth the money I am putting into it.

And besides, the wife says I am trying to pay off stuff why do I need something else. The 10K C.C. bill I paid off this summer was not enough I suppose. That means I will continue to drive my POS B2.

If you see me coming on ice, lookout!

All you said was that the brakes were scary.

But, yeah, you got me pegged. I wish I didn't have to drive at all so it's not something I want to spend much money on.

Edit: One more thing. You sometimes have to fix things. How much newer is a '94? It's going to have things. Your B2 isn't that bad. Fix the brakes. What makes you think you need a timing chain?

The brakes lock up in the front and the rears just roll along without a care in the world. When stopping in snow or ice when in 2wd it is like russian roulette. My only savior is when in 4wd the two axles are locked so it sorta helps.

I wish I didn't have to drive either, my commute is around 40 miles a day. Mostly highway at 65 or above. I cringe at the thought of highway in the snow.

The timing chain is beginning to rattle at every shift between 2600-2800 RPM. I have a new one with tensioner and guide ($90 for it yesterday) but I need the truck to get to one job or the other so I don't have time to tear it down.

Hope it holds out until I get to it.

RABS valve FUBAR? Are you getting brake fluid at the wheel cylinder?

Yeah, that's the back brakes not working at all. They generally play about a 10% role in stopping. But on snow, that becomes very improtant. I think the RABS default would be the other way. Pull the rear brakes apart. They are probably so whipped the shoes won't contact the drums. Or a line rusted out and there's nothing back there.

RABS valve was removed about 5 years ago. Both lines were connected together with a brass fitting.

I can feel them working if I do the self adjusting reverse thing, but only for about one or two stops.

Something's wrong with them. Right?

My rear brakes did a similar thing on my '97 (tested on a snowy private road).

Turned out I had 2 things going on:

1. My self adjuster screw thingy's at the bottom of the drum were essentially siezed (both sides). The passenger side barely moved, the driver side didn't at all.

2. The passenger side wheel cylinder was siezed at one end.

Since I wen't through them 30,000 ago they've been fine. Though very recently my parking brake has started to stick a bit, but it's the original cable...

If you buy it are you ging to sell your B2 or maybe build it up? I'de say get the ranger either way. Around here you don't find deals like that. That would go for $3,500 easy. For it's age it doesn't have too many miles, and looks pretty solid. You may get tired of the regular cab eventually, but with the bed cover I guess you'll be better off then I was with my reg cab.

I was actually considering looking at that blue 2wd they have parked next to it justin lol. I ALMOST went up there yesterday to take a look at that truck and the 2wd, but i actually just found one right down the road from me for a really good price. If you need to, i can fix the brakes on the honda and you use it to commute, its not the prettiest thing in the world, but it will get you from point a to point b no prob and you wont have to fill it up til you go almost 400 miles or so.

I don't particularly want to buy something else. But on the same note, I don't want to put much more money into the B2.

I am still going tomorrow morning to look at it before I have to be at work. I will go from there.

Thanks for the offer, Dustin.
