Good morning. Recently picked up a 1994 ranger with a 4.0 and manual transmission. The engine has been disassembled down to the block and the heads are rusted through. I am combing the local yards searching for a replacement 4.0. I am finding very few rangers and b4000s and few earlier explores. There seems to be a decent selection of later explorers with the 4.0 ohv available. I'm assuming and will check most are automatics. Any tips on sourcing a viable 4.0 for this truck would be greatly appreciated.

91 - 95 Explorer
90 - 95 Ranger
94 - 95 B4000

Some 96's MIGHT have the correct 4.0, sometime in the 96 model year the camshaft position sensor went from 2 wire to a 3 wire system
Some 97's MIGHT have the correct 4.0, sometime in the 97 model year they went from a 6 bolt flywheel to an 8 bolt flywheel

I believe the camshaft position sensor can be swapped to the 2 wire style.

So, manual or automatic doesn’t matter much for engine. All of the 4.0 motors I’ve put in my Choptop (manual transmission) have been from automatics. The big thing is that the early 4.0 OHV had a 6 bolt crank and the later and an 8 bolt. There was also a whole pile of random changes to the motor throughout the years.

The motor in my Choptop currently is from I think a 95 Explorer. Still had the 6 bolt crank, so my flywheel bolted right up after I pulled the flex plate and spacer. I also pulled all the stuff off the top of the motor that didn’t match what I needed for my engine harness and all. Just swapped over to make it work and dropped it in.

Cam sensors are a big thing. The 91 Ranger harness and controls in my Choptop don’t use the cam sensor. There were 2-3 different sensors and 2-3 different cam synchros for each sensor. I have swapped to get the correct sensor for different applications but it’s a little confusing if you don’t know.
