1990 fuel guage

Needle is just above E with key off.Drops to E when key is on-this tends to tell me power is getting to the guage (all other guages work).Yet when I ground the sender wire,guage won't climb.Any input?

Sounds like it might be the fuel sending unit in the gas tank is bad.

When you ground the sender wire, the guage should read full. You either have a bad guage, or a short in the cluster. Possibly elsewhere in the wiring. Possibly a bad sending unit as well. Test before throwing parts at it
