1990 ford ranger 35s gear selection

I have a 1990 ford ranger 2.9 automatic. It has 6 inch suspension 3 inch body and 35-12.50x12s with stock 3.73s it is a pig I have been putting money away to get a new gear set. What would be the best choice. 4.56. 4.88. Or what I want to do it right the first time
 
What is your use going to be? I'd be inclined to go with 5.13 myself.
 
I have 4.88's and 35x12.5 with a manual overdrive .73 I think.It does 50 at 2000 RPM.I sure wouldn't want to go higher with a 2.9.
 
I run 4:88's in my Explorer with 35's. It put it back to almost stock rpms. I have 4:56's in my Ranger with 36's, but it has the V-8 in it.
 
the truck is a pavement pusher it never sees dirt except for my driveway i want as close to stock performance as possible u said u have 4.88s in a explorer with 35s is it a auto or stick and i also have a 2.9 wouldnt that chage what would be best

I second that about considering 5.13s, I ran mine with 35s after I got my sas done and it ran great on the highway, gave more get go from a dead stop and acceleration was a lot better.
 
Freeway = 5.13
In-town = 5.13

Especially with an automatic (taller OD gear).

I have 5.13s in mine (2.9L, stick) and have not once wanted it any taller (numerically lower).
 
My Explorer has the A4ld (automatic). It is the stock transmission and I dont have any issues with it (most A4ld's go to heck). this one still shifts good and no slipping, and I have wheeled the heck out of my X. Like others have said with the 2.9 you might want a little more gear though.

Never sees dirt...what is the point of 35's???? Not being a dick but...:icon_confused:
