1989 a4ld to FM146 swap - need help!

Reflashed? No way. That's dealer-speak for "I don't have an FN clue."

If it worked in the donor, it will work in your truck. If it didn't work in the donor, reflashing isn't going to replace the burned out power transistors.

It might be badly installed (for instance, poor power or ground), but reflashing an OBD-I computer is more than a little silly since they don't have flash PROMs (that's an OBD-II thing).

The local dealerships service advisor verified the part number of my computer and told me to exchange it for another one, so I went back to the junk yard. and managed to trade for two other computers one out of a 89 b2 with manual, and one out of a 90 b2 with manual. they are completely different pat numbers. one is the same as the one I already tried. we'll see if one of them works.

As far as I can tell the pin-out must be different which sounds crazy to me. doesn't anyone have the pinout locations for the 89 ranger w/ auto and w/ manual?

When I switched to a manual trans on my 89 2.9L Ranger, I kept the auto computer and simply cut the 5 pin connector at the trans and connected the correct 2 wires to the neutral sensing switch (on the passener side), the proper 2 wires to the backup switch (driver's side), and left the pink wire for the torque converter lockup alone since there is no torque converter now (thank God). The truck has started, idled, and run perfect ever since. If you want the color codes for this let me know.

that would help then I can double check and make sure I have everything wired right. unfortunately something happend to my auto computer. now my engine can't maintain idle, runs very rough and the computer won't let me read codes. I guess I could get another auto computer but I wan't to be sure that it will work.

Found the problem:

the clutch switch was not working as it should. this allowed the engine to crank with the auto PCM, but with the manual PCM nothing would happen.

Thanks to all of you for your input.
