1988 Ranger 4x4

Actually, I take it back.

The flywheels are definitely different, but the ring gears aren't. That means the flywheel diameter must be the same.

The ring gear may not be the same depth, but it IS the same diameter.

That is exactly what I was referring to.

The bellhousing bolt pattern and where the starter bolts are were no different between the the 2.9/4.0 M50D.

This is why the '92 Ranger with a 2.9 regardless of transmission (A4LD, FM146,M5OD) shared the same smaller starter (gear reduction starter) as the 4.0 with the automatic only. 4.0/M5OD starters were the oddball that had to mate with the 4.0 standard flywheel.

Why would you put in inferior 2.9 clutch componets when you have the 4.0 parts?

The 2.9L flywheel HAS A SMALLER DIAMETER. The 4.0L transmission places the starter so it will engage with a 4.0L flywheel. So, HOW are you going to make this vehicle actually start with ANY 2.9L parts behind the crank?

2.9Ls and early 4.0Ls have the same bolt patterns between the block and bellhousing. Just how did you jump to the conclusion that this means other parts are interchangeable?

MAKG,

I do not just "jump" to conclusions in any matters.

Having done many swaps of this nature (as well as other interesting combinations) I am simply speaking from experience.

If I cannot contribute info that is accurate, I...well...simply don't contribute.

He asked if he could use 2.9 components with his 2.9 engine to do this swap, and on more than one occasion, he was given inacurate information.

I wouldn't.

But that is not the question he asked.

I would use nothing but a 4.0 clutch and all associated on ALL 2.9 trucks I get my hands on.

Judging from the parts he currently has, he only needs to buy a 2.9 clutch. He already said he does not want to buy another starter if he can help it.
