1988 BII Build

Yeah those welds do not look good...

You need to go slower, and be more consistent. You want a bead from one end to the other without any gaps, and I would do multiple passes with that welder.

With that little welder, I would do a half moon pattern all the way down the joint, that way the weld is wider and gets more of the piece involved.

See how this weld is consistent with no gaps, and is also pretty wide?

when you do somthing that thick its nice to bevel the edges the weld penetrates better and lays down better. just ends up stringer and better looking

yeah i know what you mean, i took my angle grinder and ran it in between the 2 pieces to make a little bit of a channel. i didnt do it on the top side where it has a 90* angle, but u did it on the bottom.

oh and the metal was a little thicker than what the welder says it can do, this was just to get out there and screw around with it

Also, Slow down a bit, your moving too fast across the surface.
But I have NO training, but that is what my "welding for dummys" book says.
Robert

yeah i caught myself going too fast sometimes. my helmet isnt doin a good job blocking out the brightness so i couldnt go at it long, i need to go get a new one before i do anymore. i think i may try one of the auto darkening ones, but i'm not sure. part of me doesnt trust them though, lol.

You CAN get them to look that good. I do it all the time at work. My multi-million dollar company is too cheap to buy me a few hundred dollar bottle setup. Ha ha.

Like Black B2 said, make moon shape passes, take more time, rest your wrist on something to help keep your passes consistent, and make sure your gun tip isn't too far away from the work piece (3/8" ish) is what I try to maintain. If it's too far away, it'll splat and pop. Make sure your feed rate isn't set too high either. That will cause popping as well.

well i just need to F with it a little i guess. i havent made my new work bench yet, so i had to kneel on the ground with my wrist in the air.

i may slow down the feed rate a little too

Your build is looking great man! With the welder you have, I would turn the power up all the way for 1/4", and set the feed rate at just below (2)

Here's what I did for armor on the front diff beam. (This was done with flux core) Not bad eh?

Yeah see Viva has some good welds.

Here is a quick mspaint rendering....

If the black line is your joint, the red line represents your motion with the wire. Get in a rhythm, and stay slow and steady. You'll be making great welds in no time

yeah i know viva you're build is where i'm taking it from!!! lol

i'm gonna do it a little different, but that's where the idea came from

i like the skidplate idea too

i was thinking of adding some stuff to it.....maybe some bracing on the back and then i have some 3/8" bar laying around that i may put on it.

something like this

That would work great man. And look pretty sweet! 3/8 round stock would be fairly easy to bend with a vice and a torch too. Just make sure it's hot roll, and not cold roll. Cold roll will just snap on ya!

oh yeah, i'd heat her up. my finger is still a little broken lol, i dont think i could cold bend it....haha

i need to build a new work bench this week too so i can mount my vice

yea slowing the wire speed and cranking the voltage would help. as well as moving your hand slower. maybe also pre heating the pieces wont be a bad idea?

i also have no formal training but was in manufacturing classes all thru high school (5 years lol) and i got it down pretty good. was gonna go for my ticket but i cant afford it

well, i gotta listen to the guy that was in high school for 5 years. they wouldnt have kept you there unless you were working on some real breakthrough shit!!

just kidding kris

i'm about to go down to the garage and see what i can weld up lol, i'll post pics of tonights disasters :icon_welder:

ps......i'm really excited that i can use the welder dude now

lol no problem and for what its worth i graduated early and never failed a course but relized i couldnt afford the welding ticket so i went back to get physics that way id quailify for an apprenticeship. but then i failed physics.... got over 90% in manufacturing every year though :icon_twisted:

i dropped physics both times i tried to take it in college, somehow managed a C in intro to physics....lol, complex math is not a buddy of mine
