1988 2.0 2WD-WORTH BUYING?

They banned hemispherical heads in nascar after the boss engines started running... so yea I think ford beat mopar. Theres a good read called "when cars got to fast" about when the big blocks literally started lifting off the tracks like airplanes. It was during the mopar/ford wars.
Actually IIRC it was chryslers "winged warriors" (superbird/daytonas) coupled with the 426 that raised hell in 1970, and ford and GM were crying and got them banned.

It wasnt because of fords boss 429s.

I won't argue but... come on... the boss 429 is a effin beast.

Oh im not taking anything away from them. But like fords other muscle offerings it was pretty lack luster next to what mopar was spitting out.

Athough if someone gave me a boss 429 powered big bodied mustang, i wouldnt bitch.

I had a 460 4 bolt block I had girdled and line honed, tapped the freeze plug holes and installed the boss plugs. (They were basically block stiffeners) and spent years looking for boss heads. Closest I got was 15 grand for a set of hard raced heads that needed a complete overhaul and very few shops even know what a boss head is... that was the plan for my 65. I ended up selling the 429 and just go with a 289 hp.

You could buy a crate 460 with more power for less money. Atleast nowadays. Even though what you had going on woulds been pretty bad ass

F it. If you're doing an engine swap, why not go all out?

Well... if your going all out... why mess with a crumbly 460... I dont even think you can fit a heater with a boss. Let alone AC.

View attachment 31330

sure ya could. heat, ac, cruise and overdrive. easy.

Too heavy for anything but a drag truck, and way too large to have A/C... It would affect handling too bad imo

i would think it would be ok for anything except a drag truck. it would be work launching it....dapilots rig did ok with the 6.0 diesel though....lots of work to get it there. he had 300 pounds on me and i have a 100 at least on a 460.

why does everybody think big blocks eliminate ac?
this is a 6.5 vs a 350. fits ok. sort of. maybe.

There's no way a factory Ranger A/C plenum would still fit in the engine bay with a big block that large.

aye...for a side oiler no way....be lucky to not relocate the column pass thru and piggy link the booster as well...

of course...not going to use the factory radiator in the factory position either. but that engine in the picture i posted could use the factory ac plenum if needed. modified of course but doable.

most would use a van or burb unit on the well....or vintage air. its hvac.

the newer engines in ford flavor are all huge across the heads...the 3.7 is much bigger then a 351 in that direction and rivals this 6.2 diesel.

Thats going in my LTD II

I won't argue but... come on... the boss 429 is a effin beast.

I've always maintained:

If you want out of the box performance: Mopar

If you want cheap performance: GM

If you want to slam your head against a wall trying to build performance, but always have the edge in character: Ford

What drives me insane about Ford is that they build/built the absolute legend in American performance with the GT/GT40, and yet have SO MUCH difficulty letting that technology drift into other models.

This is true.

Also, they never made a hi-po 460 back in the day. Yes there was the 428/429 but chevy and mopar had the 454/440 and back then cubes were king.

No idea why the 460 with some hotshot never made it into a torino or mustang.

Also in the 90s when GM built the 454SS C1500 pickup. Instead of a shortbox 2wd F150 with a 460 stuffed in it we got a 351W.

Fords always shyed from real balls out performance. No idea why.

And when they do build balls-deep performance, it's some ungodly expensive one-off that nobody can afford, or they never bring it to the USA.

Just like the damn svt lightning. Yeah, they slapped a blower in a pickup, but the SRT10 pickup beat it in every aspect. Same with the RS500. Fast as hell four banger with a turbo on it the size of a bloated armadillo, and UK/Europe only.

Hell, it took them 50 effing years to export a right hand drive Mustang to their second biggest market in the UK.
