Hi ,My truck seems to by starving for fuel at the top speeds or pulling up hills(bucking)is there any reason why I cant put the 1990 and up high pressure fuel pump in the tank of my 86 ranger with the 2.9. Providing that I can successfully bypass the on frame pump? thanks.Oh and i was thinking of bypassing the on frame pump by just putting a fuel filter in is place.Mark.

There is a modification that does work for that. You have the get the actual pump unit out of an explorer and put it in place of the pump on your existing sender. I don't know too much about it, but I think you can find something on it in the tech library.

Seems like a lot of extra work to fix something that could be otherwise fixed by finding the problem and replacing a part.

I don't think it was all that hard, and it seems to me like it would be worth it to only have 1 fuel pump to worry about. More parts, more problems and all that.

I plan on doing that when I go to do the 4.0 swap.

As for the piece of line that needs to go in place of the front pump, try to find one off a 2nd gen that didn't have the dual pump setup.

one pump

I was thinking if i can replace just the 1 pump(which I have from a 1991 Explorer ) it will help by removing one problem area, the frame mounted pump the wiring to that pump and the extra electrical load on the pump relay.I am a licensed tech but I took a job with the highways 10 years ago because of the higher pay and benefits package and this truck is my daily driver for the 5 mile trip.(this a is reoccurring problem it will run good for months then start acting up again).i have replace all suspect parts over the 8 years I have had the truck.I think the later fuel line would also work Mark.
