OK I finally got it to light.
I'll never see this again in my entire life. What was going on was, my distributor was really stiff to turn by hand, and the roll pin in the gear was sheared. Both of the ends of the roll pin were still in the gear, so at a glance it looked like it was fine. The gear was halfway stuck to the distributor shaft and would turn with the distributor when turning by hand.
But when installed in the engine it would spin ever so slightly. Finally I got time to really look into this problem and found out what was happening.I have no excuse as to why it didn't run when I swapped distributors the first time, I'll chalk it up to frustration induced brain farts.
But it runs now and that's all I care about.
Thanks to those who chimed in. You were right it was timing!
