i got the engine outta my 91 ford ranger, right now, cuz im redoin some stuff, along with trans, but was wondering if 150k is alot for a 91, and if i should buy a newer engine and put into it while it was out or if the one i got now will do fine. i mainly will use it on the trails, other than that it will just be drove to trails

I have 200k on mine right now. It still runs great, I keep it tuned and oil changed every 3k.
I think the main thing is, was the motor maintained properly. If so it should run a long time.

im not real sure, im sure it was untill the previous owners went on a long a__ trip with it, then got it back and were 5 miles from there house when it over heated from having no water, so they just kept goin, u can see were the manifold got real hot, and the rings on it are bad bcuz of this so im changing them, and doin some others to it, and i think im doin pistons to, i gotta check with the mechanic, but if i change all that stuff, it should last a long time as long as i keep the truck, properly tuned and maintained?

i would consult a machine shop. atleast have them check it for tolerances and such. you dont want to slap it back together if the heads, block, crank etc got warped due to the over heating. it you can actually see if it over heated badly you really need to get it looked at by a proffesional.

when i got it, the people claimed up and down that the heads were warped, i dont remember the reason, but i said it was timing, so i did timing and it was all good, so just incase im replacing the heads and all, figure it could use it, just wanted to know if u should even bother using it, but i work in a machine shop, i could do it there,and u can tell where it over heated, bcuz of spots on motor there are rust lookin spots but they are a little brighter red i believe, but it looks like over heat

i want to change my engine im after the horsepower anyone knows which engine should i buy? i dont care how much is it as long as i can see the difference of my car's performance.

They do say that motors now days last longer. I agree with the fact of weather its had it's up keeps done or not. I too would check out a machine shop and see what they say.

I had an 89 Bronco II Eddie Bauer with a 2.9.... I know that thing was somewhat abused because it would hardly get out of it's own way when I bought it. I started doing a tune-up and was somewhat shocked at how bad everything was. Actually, it was so bad that when I started it up for the first time after the full tune-up, it sat coughing and sputtering on the shop floor for at least 5 whole minutes. After that it ran like a top, and near as I could tell it had over 200k on it.

I've also had a 2.9 that ate a couple valves at 120k, and I had one that got the munchies for heads and I replaced the whole motor at 95k after it cracked 4 heads.

If you get a good motor, it can last a LONG time. I'd check it out good and just run it till it dies.

If it overheated that bad, you'll definitely want to have the heads pressure checked, magnafluxed and checked for warping. If it were me, I'd make sure the block was still good first before putting any money into it. Defintely get another pair of eyes on it.

if you are going to tear it down and install new heads you should just do it right and rebuild it.if you can't afford that get a good runner from a donor truck.just remember-a complete gasket set from felpro is 300$ now for a 4.0l.and new heads are 5-600$,plus the internal parts is too much money if you aren't going through the whole thing.
i would do a compression test and check the oil presure on your motor.if they come up decent i'de leave it alone since you say its just a trail beater

I picked up a complete Felpro set awhile back and it wasn't that expensive. Well, Advance Auto had it for like $250, but IIRC, Autozone had it for like $60!
