Antennas on vehicles are a compromise at this frequency. A full-size quarter- wave will give you acceptable performance in all directions. The only other alternative is a coil-loaded antenna or a continuously-loaded antenna. Both have radiation losses, but work reasonably well. I like continuously-loaded antennas. You can easily mount them on he bed rail about a foot behind the cab and still have acceptable performance without banging tree branches when driving through the neighbourhood. So, don't stress on this issue too much. I've managed to talk to people in Australia and New Zealand on SSB (15 watts) with a continuously-loaded antenna with the bed in the way.
I almost yanked the light out of a Taco Bell drive-thru one evening. The edge of the light fixture caught the ball at the top of the antenna and bent the fixture toward the drive-thru window.
Definitely tie it down. I forgot about it one night and took out three rows of fluorescent lights in a parking garage.
The security guard was far from impressed.![]()
