Hey everyone, I bought an 08 Ranger sport ext cab last year, and it has an automatic in it <sigh>. I am really thinking of swapping it for a manual tranny, buut, that is a heck of a lot of work, and i am not sure if it is worth the money. to get another Ranger of the same model year and miles, with a manual trans, would cost me about $3,000. Anyone think it's worth the swap?

It depends how badly you want a manual. You would likely be better off just finding a truck with a stick.

The manual swap will run you at least $100 usings unknown condition parts....

Just recently did the swap on an '01. Used upullit junkyard parts for a grand total of about $700 or so. ALOT of messing around confusing sensors and stuff.

Uh...WHY did you buy an auto in the first place?? What ever happened to people buying the truck that they want??

What's wrong with the auto? They're both 5 speed, and the auto can get within 1 or 2 mpg of the stick. And on the 4.0 at least, the towing capacity for the auto is about double what's recommended for the stick.

I really want a manual, and I would be better off finding a truck with a stick, but I got this truck for a very good deal used, with only 3000 miles on it. I would be losing a lot of money by trading it in, even on another used truck.

Well, I know an automotive electrician, so he's up to helping. But did the crank on the 01 have a hole in the spline for the pilot bering? my buddy said that it would be fun having to pull the motor to replace the crank. Any information you have on your swap dealing with sensors would be greatly appreciated.

I find that the auto has really poor line pressure for downshifting the trans. while under load. The trans. is always in third gear going around uphill corners and well, it is just extremely annoying. Plus, I prefer manual. I was hoping to do this swap cheaper than trying to trade in this truck and get a manual.

Thanks for the replies!

Danny.

Its probably going to be cheaper to sell the ranger (private party) and get a similar one with a stick. This is assuming you wanted to have new parts in your next to new Ranger.

Im kind of thinking it would be cheaper to sell it, depending on the market. But I cant afford to have a truck sitting in my driveway trying to sell it, while buying the truck I really want. lol. If it were that easy, i'd do it!

It's not worth it on a new truck like yours. I did it on an older truck, but I had a complete donor vehicle; and I did not want to do it. There are so many little things you need, a donor vehicle is the only was I would consider it. And taking apart a good truck is a bad idea. It won't make your life better when it's done, and your life will be a whole lot worse while you are doing it.

You should either decide to learn to live with the auto (my choice), or immediately trade it--like tomorrow--and get what you want.

I see your point. But getting a truck with a manual is pretty much out of the question. So I either have to live with it, or give it a shot. I dont plan on doing the swap for at least a year. I have time to research.
