04 explorer rear springs

I noticed on my moms 04 explorer, it had coil springs rather than leaf springs on the rear. Is there a advantage to these over leaf springs?

It has independent rear suspension, which offers far better ride quality and handling characteristics than a solid axle with leaf springs. Check out this link for some more info.
