04-06 k&n on a 98 3.0?

Just had a quick question... would a 04-06 k&n work on a 98 3.0? Asking because I’ve always thought rangers were the same between 98 and 2011 minus a few engine changes. Wondering if one of those engine changes would prevent me from installing it?

At some point the maf sensor changed from having a separate IAT sensor to being a combined single unit. This would effect the intake tube design. There were also changes under the hood that could effect airbox shape. The overflow tank changed to a different system at some point which sits next to the airbox so its possible that effects how the intake would fit.

This. Starting in 04 the MAF housing was smaller diameter and molded into the airbox lid.

Ah alright. It was worth a shot.
Anything out there that would be worth a shot as far as a cold air intake goes? I was planning on stuffing an inter cooler in from a 7.3 power stroke but that idea was scratched for obvious reasons.

Just one last thing while I'm on here... My old air filter with over 25,000 miles on it which was yellow and very dirty seemed to have more airflow than the filter I bought. Any brands to lean toward or stay away from?

A very obvious difference in power. A night and day difference from when I pulled in to the Autozone parking lot to when I pulled out (changed it in the parking lot)

Hmm. Unless there was something physically wrong with the new filter, I'd look for an external issue created during the swap. No off the shelf filter should create a restriction you'd ever feel like that.

You can buy a K&N filter to drop in the oem housing. I like them since they are re-useable but you have to make sure you don't over oil them or the oil will burn out your MAF sensor. They flow a tad better than regular paper filters but you really wouldn't notice a difference. Like I said, I use them because I can clean them, not for any performance gain.
