My credo
What's the worst that could happen?
Is the CEL supposed to come on when the ignition is turned to ON? Mine doesn't. so I am curious if it's working.
Or does it only come on to indicate an issue?

I suppose it would easy enough to check just by disconnecting the MAF or something...
but it's more fun asking y'all

I'm pretty sure there is a bulb prove out on key ON cycle.

It then goes out until some parameter falls out of the normal threshold... at which point the light comes on.

Disconnecting the MAF should turn the light on.

I'm not getting and codes but it's running a little rough on startup and then smooths out, so I scanned and got no engine codes. But it made me curious, hence the query.

Imma go pull the MAF.

thanks Unc.. Hope you're having a wonderful rainy a$$ Tuesday. (y)

It's sunny and 70...

The CEL light is not working. I pulled the MAF sensor and got a bunch of codes. CEL never blinked.

Anyway cleared those codes and reran the OBD2. Got two codes P1151 and P1131 for O2 sensors.

For P1311 Google says "Lack of upstream heated oxygen sensor switch, typically indicates a problem with the oxygen sensor on the bank 1, sensor 1 side, which is the one closer to the engine.

For P1151 Google says "Lack of upstream heated oxygen sensor switch Indicates Lean Bank 2" indicates that the upstream heated oxygen sensor on Bank 2 is not switching as it should.

I'm guessing I should replace the O2s -- I think there are four, the two upstream and two down. Looking at Rock for Bosch.

So basically lean on both banks? That would be consistent with very old/high mileage O2 sensors I suppose. I'd think a vacuum leak is at least slightly more likely.

Thanks Senor.
I have confirmed there are 3 and also have confirmed it is way too difficult for me to want to take care of myself.
There's barely any room to maneuver. It would be easier to drop the exhaust which is something I don't want to do.
And then I have to figure out a way to get my fat hands up around the bell housing to reconnect the plugs.

I'm farming this one out.
