02 3.0 into an 88

So my 3.0 took a dump. my buddy just so happened to have a 3.0 from an 02 in his garage. im noticing that they have some differences like distributor verse coil packs. is this an easy swap or a pain. Whats the easiest way to get this done. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

an 88 doesn't have a 3.0, it has a 2.9, completely different engine.

Hept is right, an 88 wouldn't have a 3.0 unless it was put there by someone other than the factory. That would complicate your question greatly since we don't know anything about the donor.


If you are actually referencing your 92, which might have an actual 3.0, but could also have a 2.9 or a 4.0, then it may be possible. The 3.0 Vulcan has changed very little over the years, you'd really just need to strip both engines down to the long block and throw the 92 parts on the 02 engine. The first thing I would try, before anything else, though is pop the dis and the syncro drive out of them and make sure the dis will fit in the newer engine.
