01 Ranger & the OBD-II connection

I'm thinking of getting one, but have found the marketplace to be awash with all manner of applications. I don't know that I'd want something overly gadgety. But on the other hand, I definitely want to be able to correct & clear trouble codes - be they erroneous or truly indicative of an underlying problem.

Here's hoping someone would like to volunteer some clear discussion or guidance and maybe even suggest some purchasing ideas.

Here is my truck information: 2001 Ranger XLT, Extended Cab 4-door, 4x4, 4.0L V6, regular bed.
