Hey all

So on my commute home (had to drive like 80 miles today to get to work) I noticed a vibration sound from between 2700-3100 RPM... it only does it when under load, (I revved engine up and no sound) which I think rules out exhuast. Kind of sound like a heat shield rattling. It was more pronounced in 3rd gear when I was accelerating to pass/get on the freeway.

Any ideas? Thought also maybe ujoints, but isnt that more of either a clicking or squeaking?

Thanks

when my u joints went out it was a rattle not a click or squeak, also it could be exhaust cause the at different rpm's your motor shakes different and can cause yout exhaust to rattle but what i think is check your tranny bolts and see if they are loose or even still there, hope someone with more knowlege can help but also on my b2 from 2700-3500 rpms it shook and that was because my brakes lost the anti rattle clip

Sounds like........... the shield on your catalytic converter rusted and is rattling. My 97 did that about 5 years ago so youd be in the right age group to have it get rattly. They are only tacked on at the corners from the factory and collect mud and dirt then rust. You can either tack weld it back on or just cut the shield off the rest of the way (what I did)

yea i checked once it cooled down.... not u joints and not trans mounts... prob cat converter shield... its not terrible, ill prob just deal with it for the time being.... just a little over zealous cause I just bought the damn thing... I need to chill out a little...

I'll check the cats tomorrow, the rest of the exhaust seemed solid

Made sense to me... Haha.

My F100 right after the header install I hadn't relocated the C6 trans shifter... At 6,200 RPMs it would torque itself up enough to shift gears by itself with it locked in 1st gear... a scary feeling, I guess in lamest terms it was shakin different. The RPMs he described are when the power band pick up. In sure that's when it torques the most putting the exhaust in a bind.

BTW to the OP I wouldn't get too excited about the little squeaks and rattles right away. If its not smoking grinding or on fire everything else is an easy fix.

rose i typed that out all wrong i had just got off work and was tired and my typing wasnt up to par

Does that model truck have a carrier bearing in the rear drive shaft? If it does check out the rubber that it is mounted in. Frequent failure point.

No carrier.

Think its some kind of exhaust shield. Didn't hear it as pronounced this morning.
