Just a thought...but what kind of shape is the constant velocity joint in the front drive shaft at the t case in? (I think your truck has the cv style drive shaft) maybe the joint is effed up?

definantly sounds like a slipping chain. ive had it happen twice on mine. gotta get a new t case and run the vent line all the way up to the engine bay by the fuze box with some rubber hose from a parts store. more than likely you got too deep in the water and mud and sucked alot into the case itself
