Hey guys and gals , I could REALLY use some advice from anyone that knows about the A4LD trans . This is in my '92 Ext cab 2 whl dr DD that a buddy just gave me . I had her out today and went to pass a slooooooooowwwww dump truck and when I pulled out to make the pass , all I got was the engine revving up , trans never kicked down or anything . At the next light I went to accelerate and had nothing ! No forward gear at all ! This all happened when in OD . If I drive her in regular D its fine , pulls strong , accelerates good etc , when Im on the highway and shift up from D to OD , I can feel the OD kick in and watch the rpm's drop as she goes right into OD mode . Truck was driving fine in OD up till today , checked Trans fluid , looked good , smelled good and was full when hot . Im baffled how I could have no problems with forward when in D and absolutely nothing when in OD from a standing start .! Im guessing maybe a burned clutch for the forward 1st gear when in OD , but wouldnt that mean I would lose forward period ??:dntknw: Im really hoping someone can point me to something stupid or simple as a likely culprit cause theres no way in hell I can afford to rebuild the trans right now and its supposed to be my DD for work starting next week !! ANY and ALL help or suggestions are appreciated !

Blowed the overdrive sprag out of it or the OD planets or the over drive drum came apart.

possible broke tang pieces hanging the one way like he said.

icr the shift schedule on it off hand...for some reason i am thinking it also grabs a band iirc when in 3.2.1. positions. where it just uses forwards in od...i dont even know where my manual is...

generally on those early units od is done once it is done due to the valving..

ok well , thats not what I was hoping for , cause from what you guys are saying and what I have read up on the trans , this can only be fixed by taking it out and having it dis assembled . I was hoping I might get away with just having a good serviceing done , maybe the OD servo , etc , ANYTHING but a tear down . Well Im going to the bone yard today anyway , guess I'll have to look for a low mileage tranny in a wreck and keep my finger crossed that a junker one will be ok . Any other tips would be great. Can I get away with driving her in regular D for awhile or could I lose forward all together ?? If you guys wouldnt drive it with the OD Drum or Sprag gone , then I guess I shouldnt either ? I guess Im thinking if something "blew " its only a matter of time before the metal destroys the rest of it. I have a 75 mile each way commute for work on some pretty desolate roads , so the last thing I need is to lose all forward gears out in the middle of nowhere

Yep time for a rebuild..the last A4LD i did for a carry out was about 800 bucks. New bands, servos, od planets, od sprag, od drum, filter and master overhaul kit with steels converter and shift kit.

When you go to just drive it turns on the coast clutch in the OD drum which holds in place of the sprag.
