Best 4.5" angle grinder?

i swear by the dewalt.beat the crap out of it for years at a stretch.but one little suggestion...don't bother with the 4 1/2''.get the 5'',it's just a little bigger,but has way more power and durability.

trust me,it's worth the few extra bucks.i would burn out 4.5 grinders in a week or two,i've had the 5'' i have now for 4 years.replaced the brushes on it once,it's still going strong.

have i mentioned that i'm not easy on these things?

I am a believer of the rule to buy the best tool you can afford. I have had too many,"CHEAP" tools die right in the middle of the job, had to quit,repair or replace the tool and then continue. Most likely the next day or when I could get back to it. I have always used Milwaukee and have not ever been disappointed.

I prefer to buy my tools from somewhere I actually have a manager to yell at if someone gives me shit about trying to return it for warranty or anything.

Also, I am not a fan of angle grinders with a trigger like that one, my friend has one and I find I hit shit with the trigger when trying to put it down and it fires up...

The reason I want the grinder is to grind off a few rivets, some light sheet metal and tube work, and to cut down some leaf springs (they make good quarry wedges!) so would the 4.5" be fine for me? I know how much you use your grinders, I've seen the GT12. Haha.

I have trimmed fenders, cut an access panel, cut Ubolts, took out all 4 rivits on one leaf spring hanger, cut some exhuast hangers, rear sway bar... With my black and decker

go with that one.. thats their better one.. 10 amps i LOVE mine.. my pop has 2 and a bunch of cheap ones.. the dewalt is built well and will last you.. most you might have to do down the road is chang the cord... i picked mine up on ebay used for 40 bucks.. got a great deal on it. lowes has them in stock for that price.

4.5" would be fine for that.

This is the newer version of the grinder I have. The third handle mount on the top is really nice for cutting because it gets your hand away from the blade and sparks. Plus its a 5 year warranty instead of 3 with the Dewalt.

I got a Milwaukee 4.5" (the $100 one, not the cheaper smaller one) been great for me.

Most of my higher end tools I end up with either Milwaukee or DeWalt. I've had good success with both.

the 4.5 may be fine...but what i'm saying is that for the little bit higher cost and slightly larger size,i would go right to the 5''.it's just that much better,and then some.

i tried the bigger grinders too(7'',9'')but they are too bulky unless you're doing heavy fab.and i wasn't exaggerating about the 4.5 lasting me a week.after a while even the places with 'good' warrantees don't want to deal with you any more.so for the 5'' to last that long it tells you what a difference there is.

for light use it should last you a lifetime,but not give out when you want to do something that needs a bit more power.i routinely use 7'' discs on the 5'' grinder(not recommended....kinda dangerous as the edge of the disc is right about in line with the trigger)and it handles it fine,but i can still manoeuver it when doing detail work with a 4.5'' zipcut.

basically the cheap ones with various dedicated ends last pretty good and keep me from having to change from flap to wire to grind etc....

I've got one as well, don't use it very much but I spent the money on it knowing i wouldn't have to spend the money again for a very long time

i used to do this....i would buy the cheapies six at a time,then use the corpses of the first to die in an attempt to keep the others alive.but having a ginder with a particular setup and changing grinders all the time usually left me with a tangled mess of cords.i've since found i can change accessories faster than grinders,so i just keep one.then i can just line up accessories instead of awkward grinders.there's only four that i routinely use,anyway.

I'm with bobby on this one. if you want the very best, buy a metabo! These things are amazing! The day i bought mine it ran nonstop (except for changing wheels) for 8 hours and was cold to the touch the whole time. Its super quiet too.

If you happen to break one, take it to an authorized dealer and they have a forever no questions asked no reciept warantee. Thats not lifetime, thats forever! My fastenall guy says he's been selling them for 15 years and no one has ever brought one back. He told me if it craps out on me not only will he honor the warantee, he'd also give me a makita.

This Metabo sounds like it's worth looking into...

I have a 5" Bosch and I think it's great. I bought it a few years ago and have never had a problem with it. I think it cost me around $120. Not the most expensive and not the cheapest either. One of the best parts of it is that it's not made in China. A lot of the grinders out there are made in China; they're cheap stuff and not well built and from a country I'd rather not support. The Bosch I have was made in Germany.
