I have a 1995 Ranger XLT 5speed 4x4 3.0L, and my transmission is geting louder, esp. in 1st and 2nd and 5th and when im rolling(any speed over 10mph) in neutral. Its whining, like if i was in reverse, ya all know that annoying reverse whine im talking about right? I was told to add more tranny fluid, but its full, so i was thinking about changing all of it (10qts). Plus i dont think its EVER been changed and i have 115xxx miles on it.
What kind of tranny fluid should i use, someone told me to use motor oil, and that all standard trannies you have to use regular motor oil, but im not sure of this. Can anyone tell me first, why its whining, and second, what type of "tranny fluid" to use. Thanks

If it's whining, it's already much too late, you most likely need a new transmission now.

IIRC, the fluid in the 5-speed (Mercon ATF) should be changed every 60,000 miles minimum (30,000 under the "severe service" schedule).

Is your transmission leaking at all? I had the same thing happen on mine because the fluid got too low. I think those trannies have an issue with the tailshaft gasket. Those transmissions also use ATF as their normal lubricant....as wierd as it sounds.

Mercon ATF??? as in "Automatic". Transmission. Fluid, i have a standard trans.

Manual trannys often use other lubricants than gear oil. They can take anything from ATF to motor oil. In the case of the M5OD, it takes ATF. Gear oil will ruin it. And, if it's making noise, start looking for a new one.

It doesn't take anywhere near 10 qts. It's more like 3-4. An automatic trans takes about 10 qts.

That person is a dumbass. Sure, SOME manual trannies use motor oil but MOST use either automatic transmission fluid or gear oil. Yours uses ATF.

ok so what could be going bad on my tranny, it just started making noise in Sept. and its fine exept it makes that noise and does;nt like to go in 1st and reverse as smoothly as it should, its not like i have to FORCE it in gear, but i have to move it around in neautral a little for it to go in first, and to put it in reverse i have to put in thrid(or any other gear) and then reverse. (new clutch was put in on Aug. 14 by the way)

I hope i can just change the gear oil and the noise will go away. Mercon ATF it is then!!!
Ill change it by this weekend then ill tell ya if it goes away.

I guarantee you it won't go away, the gears and/or bearings are trashed (and will only get worse untill it leaves you stranded somewhere).

If you had the clutch done in August, and the trans started making noise in Sept., I'd be suspicious of a link there.

Its the 3 shift rail plugs at the top-rear of the trans that tend to leak slowly without notice.
