I have wanted a ranger with a big diesel in the worst way for as long as I can remember, and now that I have a friend with a chassis and fab shop :icon_welder:, Its gunna be a reality soon. I was wondering if anyone knew the dimensions of the smallest turbo diesels like 6.9L (old powerstroke) and 6.6L (can't believe im saying this... Duramax) or has anyone else out there done something similar? I know its going to require serious serious work but anything is possible right? :icon_thumby:

The 6.9 was never turbo.

Bobbywalter has a 6.2 (I think) in his rig. I've seen pics of that thing, looks pretty stock too. His isn't turbo though.

6.0 is pretty small as diesels go. A 4.5 Powerstroke is probably the best fit without lots of fab, but it's rare and only a 6-cyl.

i never knew they made a v6 powerstroke, ill have to look into that (though rarity will be an issue) ill take a look into the 6.2 as well

The 4.5 is found in Low Cab Forward trucks, and that's about the only place they are found. They highly resemble a 6.0 in form, function, and problems, just 2 cylinders short.

It also wasnt a powerstroke, the op called it an old powerstroke, when in fact it was just an idi international.

i totally agree on the 4.2l, the 4bt also has my vote. but if youre gonna do it i say go all out and do a 5.9 cummins or 7.3l powerstroke. but a 10.8l cummins in the bed would be way more awesome, 1550ft lbs and 500hp

just saying go big or go home.

Wasn't there also a 4.5 V6 Powerstroke? I seem to remember seeing that displacement somewhere in Powerstroke land.

That might be the 6-cyl LCF engine I was talking about. I honestly can never remember the actual displacement, I just know it's a 4.something. Imma go look this one up.

EDIT:It's a 4.5L

I vote for a 1.9 or 2.0 VW motor. You can get adaptors, and it'll actually be useable off-road. A big, heavy diesel in a Ranger would be detrimental to off-road capability.

What kind of adapters can you get? To mate it to certain transmissions or are you talking about engine to frame adapters?

To mate it to a tranny. The motor mounts are the easy part....

ur on the right track lol diesels are heavy and thats not want u want in a off road ranger. also it wouldnt be too eazy to get the weight between the front and back anywhere near the same.
