I crossed about a mile's worth of water deep enough to cover the headlights in my b2, completely stock.

terrifying as hell experience.
i was changing differential and transfercase fluids for months.

I've done water channel crossing before on my almost stock Ranger. My rule of thumb is to not cross water ways that are higher than the cab's bottom. This way I know that all breathers are above the water line. And besides, it sucks to have a wet carpet. Takes days to dry out.

Hence why I would never have carpet in a TRUCK, but thats just me I guess.

i dont think its worth it unless you're building your rig to do it almost daily...
electrical has to be waterproofed. all the vent tubes. so on and on and on..

Well I kinda am trying to do all that. I like to go muddin', and that sometimes involves puddles ending up being WAYYYYYYYYYYYY deeper than originally thought.

I understand the possibilities of ruining my carpet... Dont really care that much about it. Eventually the carpet was going to be pulled and everything was gonna be roll-on bedliner'd.

What exactly are those Lima? Are they just a valve you can close up for crossing water? And you say old chevy axles? Can you be more specific?

The breather on your A4LD is a crazy mixup of ups and downs, and it eventually exits with the breather tube facing straight down to the ground. I made a breather manifold for all my breather tubes, and the single inlet tube runs up into my cab at the 'B' pillar, basically all the way up to the seatbelt.

Those things Lima Bean posted are sweet though.

If we cross some iffy deep stuff we pre-attach a recovery strap to a front and rear tow point so you dont have to scuba dive. The water up here in Alaska even in July will have you hyperthermic in no time. Spare cloaths in a drybag help too plus its not uncommon for us to wind up having our hip waders on when your mucking around in the muskeg non-stop.

Pre-attaching a strap is a good idea. I will do that. None of us have waders yet, its on the to-do list, but not very high on it. I know what you mean about the water, here in BC most small creeks (such as this one) are glacier fed too, and icy cold on the hottest summer days.

Im not too worried about spare clothes for this specific crossing, but I will probably have some with me because its a snow-covered logging road, who knows wtf can go down... as I say the cabin is only 2 miles (if that) away, so if problems arise I can get dry/warm.

Where abouts is the end of the breather tube located, exactly? That manifold idea is a pretty good one. I like it.

Ran it along the floor, and up the B pillar (where the front driver's side seat belt attaches) It ends just below the upper mounting point for the seatbelt, zip-tied all the way up the pillar to keep it in place. They are little vent valves. When your diffy gets hot from running they let the pressure out. Most have a little spring so they stay closed so they work as a check valve too so crap dont get in. I have got them off 70's, 80's, 90's chevys. You just plug it into the end of your vent hose and then Zip tie the thing up high. Probably buy the things at a parts store too.

I have an M5OD, no breather hose on it... The other three (front/rear diff, t-case) run to a manifold on the frame rail, and one single breather hose runs up into the cab.

The Tcase already has a hose coming off it right? Where is it, somewhere on the top side? close to front or back? Does it clip onto the frame rail like the back diff or anything?

Does anyone know where the a4dl breather comes out of the tranny, and where it ends?

My book shows the transfer case vent hose for both 13-50 and 13-54 located on the drivers side right where the tranny and transfer case meet. Neither haynes nor Chiltons showed me the tranny vent. In the cartoon picture it looks like they have the little check valve on them but its a tiny pic. Should be able to crawl under and look straight up at it between the driveline and main case.
