A matter of perception, it would seem. Is the "crazy" ex enough so to return at some unforseen time, to wreak havoc on precious items or things of that nature?

Best bet is to find an old insurance card or something with the VIN# on it, buy a Carfax, run the VIN and see where it was last reported. Not sure if it would work with the age of the truck. Truck also may not even be local to his area anymore or not even be on the road anymore. Hope he has luck.
If I had the money to buy my first car back ('67 MGB), I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I'm still trying to find a wallet I lost on a boat while I was in Special Ops many years ago. Should I place an ad on Craigslist as well? It had some cash in it and my military ID!!!! Could I have more luck than this this poor schmuck?? lol
