98 ford ranger toggle switch 4wd

Hey does anyone know how to hook up your 4wd to a toggle switch. My buddy has a 98 ranger 4wd as well and he has his 4wd hooked up to a toggle switch that connects to the battery. I've done some research but i don't know if it will work or how to do it. Any help would be awesome
 
I don't know what your buddy did but a simple toggle switch isn't gonna work. The original 3 position switch has resistors inside for each position so the module knows what to do with the shift motor. I don't know what he has running off of a toggle switch but it ain't the t/case.

The motor on the transfer case that looks like a windshield wiper motor has a yellow wire and an orange wire that makes it engage and disengage. It only takes about 2 seconds of electric each way to make it work. To disengage you must reverse the polarity of the orange and yellow wire with about 2 seconds of electric. I did my 95 this way....

Guess I didn't think about bypassing the module altogether and going straight to power. You have no idea if you have the shaft in the exact correct postion though. You'd have to be careful with that sort of setup but if you're making it work........:icon_thumby:
 
It would work, but a 3 pole toggle would be your best bet. a position for 2 hi and a position for 4hi and one for 4 lo. I can see the resistor idea being good, cuz it limits the amount of power to the wires to short bursts in the proper length of time, I would look deep into this before trying to change the factory setup. Now I will say this, the buttons in the 98 are already setup 3 pole, its just a different type of switch. So think about it.
 
i have seen momentary switches on the big side shift cases...dont think it works with the rear shift cases because of the sweep...i tried it but it always popped out etc...


your sayin he is using momentary switch and stopping when the light gets to where he wants right? not toggles but momentary toggles right?
