Why does it sound like theres a midget with a hammer behind my dash when I first turn the heat on in the morning?

I don't think it's much of a problem, my guess is that it's normal, but I thought I'd check into it on here just in case.

he must be hungry id feed him:icon_rofl: might just be something hitting the blower motor. does it do it after it warms up?

in fact. thats the heater midget.
reffer to your owner manual to propper feeding of him

take his hammer away.

Sounds like a mode door actuator. See if you can flip through the modes (blower position and temperature) until you find a spot where it stops. If you do, they aren't hard to replace.

If you do that and it never stops, throw a cheddar cheese and Virginia ham sandwich (grilled is optional) and a coke in the glove box your your heater midget.

You need to let the gnome out of the glovebox.

Actualy you need to take the dash apart and clean all the leaves and twigs that have come in through the cowl vent on the hood. My 85 ranger did the same thing and it was because I used to park under a tree all the time and it filled up with debri. Pain in the ass to clean them out.

Your 85 didn't have the same traps to keep stuff out of the box. It also doesn't have the electric actuator motors that the 03 has.

Yeah if i bring the heat to the middle area the knocking stops. It only knocks when it's all the way over in the red.

But it does stop knocking after the truck warms up. Takes about 2 minutes and it goes away even if it's all the way in the red.

Would that be the actuator?

BTW, it may help to add, I rarely use the heat, I'm in Florida... maybe hasnt been used much so the midget doesnt know how to react...

Yeah, that's classic actuator noise. Eventually the actuator will get the door moved to where it wants it. It just so happens that yours gets there at about the same time.

The heat may help it get moving too. Sounds like a new temp blend door actuator is in order.
