Need advise from the experts please

ok, ive been having a missfire problem ever since i did the plugs on the truck. ford told me that my plugs were destroyed and my wires were arcing. also my truck averaged 500 km per tank before the switch, and i just got 380 on my last tank. now, will arcing wires and missfires kill my mileage that bad? if yes, i will want to have ford do the work and replace the plugs and wires, that way if it doesnt fix the problem, i can hold them accountable. but would it be something else? i know in winter your MPG goes down, but dam thats alot.

It depends. It seems to me that since the ill effects happened after the tune up, that it's due to the tuneup. Something happened.....

Hopefully ford uses the exact same plugs and wires that are supposed to be used. There IS a difference between Motorcraft and cheap aftermarket brands.

yes i would be having motorcraft parts only. i was going to go to aftermarket but took them out. looking at over 300 for them to do that work. bawls! or i could try doing it myself for $100.

In the arhives someplace there should be a thread that Rangers like motorcraft plugs not the expensive plugs. You didn't say which plugs you put in. The truck didn't throw a check engine light?

Yes, that could kill your mileage and bad.

Motorcraft or Autolite plugs are the best options, and in that order. Same goes for wires. BDW wires are good too, but I'd take them as a 3rd option.

Dear god, I WISH I could get 500 clicks on a tank. I'm lucky to be getting 400 km's and thats running it almost dry. I've just replaced the plugs with bosch 2+ and those killed the mileage worse, so changed them out for Motorocraft Platinum's, better, but still not close to 500 on a tank. Let me know where this goes for you.

yep, engine light for multiple missfires on cyl 3 2 and 5. coil is good. needs wires though. i also have on the list of to doo, front wheel bearings and brakes and rotors. lol

Not to be master of the obvious, but have you check the firing order on your wires? A drop that big in fuel mileage sounds like two crosse wires, did you do them all at once or one at a time? Are your plugs gapped right?

Ive been there. I actually refused to check my wires once because I KNEW they werent crossed. Well turns out the wires in my head were crossed for not checking them. LOL It was a 2.3 too lol. I did my timing like 17 times, before finally moving around my wires. LOL

yep, wires are good i did em one at a time. its destroyed plugs and toasted wires. got a set of autolite plugs and ngk wire kit. its going in this weekend. im currently using a quarter tank to drive 20 minutes.

Ya know...it's funny that I'm suffering from the same issue, minus the misfire.

I don't know what the hell happened, but my mileage went from 500k to a tank to less than 300.

I put motorcraft plugs and taylor 8mm wires on a little over a year ago. I know they aren't the issue 'cause like I said already, I don't have any misfiring. It runs like it's brand new.

I'll get pics...even my computer in the center console tells me I only have 320 or so Km's before empty, but I always get less.

I did notice the difference when I started my tow truck job. The office is like 2km away from my front door. Not sure if the continuous short drives would cause a problem.

Any ideas on this one?

The engine has roughly 218,000km's (135,458 miles)on it now. Could it be getting tired..even tho it still runs good?

a drop that much is quite likely crossed wires, however f-ed plugs and crappy wires can cause that... my buddy's 2.3L mustang (4 plug motor) had fuel economy drop of about the same... ended up being a plug wire messed up, only one, checked the resistance of each tip to tip, and one was way out of spec...

i would do that for all your wires (one by one) if they all work well, get a spray bottle, fill it with water, wait till night, then spray down all the sparkplug wires, start the engine, look for blue arc's, if you see blue arcs, they are f-ed if you don't run an open palm over them, while the engine is running, and if you feel a tickle, they are done...

you should be able to check the plug for damage visually... pull them out, look for melting, damage or any excessive discoloration on the tip and electrode, check porcelain for any cracks, anything like that wrong, toss em get new, make sure to check the gap before installing, anti seize on the threads is always a good idea too
