Awesome.

I am aware of the reported trans issue. It's actually not as big as it sounds and seems to affect a small percentage of the actual vehicle population.

The fix is to sleeve the bore though. If it's bad enough it might need a new case.

yeah i hope the trans wont give him any trouble.

it has a couple issues tho.
the passenger side airbag is blown, and the ABS light is on.
what are the chances that the ABS light went on due to the truck being parked for like a month with strong humidity?

this seems like is not affecting braking tho.


seems like it had a small accident, since the driver airbag is still good.
ill just fix the bulb and airbag module to get rid of the blinky light

Hard to guess what the ABS light is without codes. I doubt just being parked in high humidity would do it though.


Could be lots of things causing it if it was wrecked.

yeah, we're changing the fluids next week end, and we will check the brakes and clean them up to see if that helps, if not its shop time.

he says the braking is not affected tho

2002-09 Ford Explorer

At one time the Ford Explorer was best-selling sport utility on the continent, but it was dogged by the rollover controversy in 2000, largely attributable to tread-separating Firestone Wilderness tires. The all-new 2002 Explorer got a strong, fully boxed frame upon which an especially rigid body was assembled, and underpinned by a fully independent suspension front and rear for improved stability and handling.

It was all the right stuff, but Explorer owners have been surprised by unexpected and expensive repairs. First and foremost, some owners have replaced the trouble-prone automatic transmission more than once. Watch for slipping or jerking gear changes, particularly in older models (2002-04).

Owners have a litany of other complaints: frequently failing wheel bearings, broken springs and struts, bad differentials, cracked intake manifolds, short-lived alternators and fuel pumps, faulty air conditioners and broken power-window regulators. On the cosmetic side, the plastic exterior liftgate panel is prone to cracking.

just like any regular vehicle. thanks for the concern tho.
a bad fuel pump is something u can expect on any vehicle. my truck's pump died at exactly 1 week after i got it.

so far it seems trouble free. just the abs light ON.

On a side note, I know my mom's ABS light came on 3 times. Each time was because of a blown wheel bearing.

yeah i know. ill keep an eye on the trans and the gate lid.

the abs light might be a bearing u know, since it has a low hum in a rear tire when driving around 30mph, once u pass that up its quiet.
it wont hum when the gas is floored.

lol....like I said before, if I ever have to replace my X down the road, the Xterra will be the replacement if I can't find another decent 2nd gen Explorer.

When we replaced the original wheel bearings last winter, one of the replacement Motocraft wheel bearing already had the pigtail broken off in the box.

It took a downright obsenely cold day to crack the rear hatch, it got down to something like -20 one night. We call it it's buttcrack.

Dunno what the deal is, it isn't a real common thing to see a cracked one. Apparently they figured out their goof before they redid the hatch.

The tranny problems in general are not new for the '02's, issues go clear back to '91. My brother is putting a tranny in a '99 right now.
