Delayed "Lockup" on Torque Converter

As for the tranny issue, its not normal for an auto tranny to act the way these do. I have driven many auto vehicles and aside from the thunder bird I had this one is the worst. Mine does the same thing as yours and many of these guys on here but I think its more the fact that ford cant build anything that works past 80 k. Im just waiting for the stupid thing to give out totaly then I will deal with it. If you do figure something out let me know.

They are designed to do that until they up to operating temp. It isn't a problem, it is things working how they are supposed to.

And I think a 2000 Ranger still has the vacuum hubs.

Mine is a 2000 and it doesn't but the cutoff was like june or july I got lucky that it doesn't have vacuum hubs. Mine is a july truck if yours is march it could be a leak in the hub system. And I have never driving a car or truck with an auto tranny that acts the way this thing does and it hasn't always done it so I have a feeling its not normal, hot or cold it does the same crap. The only good thing is that its consistant in its crappyness.

I can go with consistent crappiness, as long as it doesn't leave me stranded... I can't have a leaky hub, just not possible. See picture...

any idea where that temp sensor is for the transmission? maybe it's gone stupid... or the wire is corroded, or missing, who knows.

lots of ideas on where to stick a temp sensor, but none stating where the one the PCM reads is... not that I can find anyway.

I rise to the defense of Ford, although mostly for somewhat older models. I drove a 1980 Mustang with a 200 cid and 3-speed auto (C3 maybe?) that topped out somewhere around 210k miles before the alternator died (sitting killed the car after that...). I also had a 92 Ranger that had somewhere between 250k and 300k (odo was off due to slow speedo) that ran like a champ (or at least as much as 100hp can be expected to). Just don't rely on their A/C systems post-82.

I've had an '86 beater ranger and a '92 Ranger Splash... I like the 92 a lot more. This one is decent, but a gas hog from hell. 15 mpg, doesn't matter if I go fast, slow, easy, or drive it like I stole it... 15 mpg. A/C goes to Dodge, but I've put frost on the windows in 100° weather with my '92 Ranger.

After replacing the entire system in my 92, I could frost the windshield as well. Unfortunately, I could never get the system to stop leaking. Variable problems usually relating to old o-rings (came with the new parts, but must have been on the shelf a while) and improper torque on the various fasteners. By the by, 134a and a VOT (variable orifice tube) can do wonders for these models...

Oddly enough it's been doing rather well lately... hmm. I looked closely, the transmission cooling lines bypass the radiator completely, only using the auxiliary cooler... I don't even see where it could be hooked up even if I wanted to. I'm always smelling antifreeze when I get out after a drive. Maybe it's a radiator for (or from) a manual transmission vehicle? I looked at dad's 2000 Exploder, his go through the radiator as well as the auxiliary cooler.

A VOT, hmmm interesting, I'll think about that... IDK if the A/C even works.

Thats odd im pretty sure mine routes through the radiator, I have to look but I think thats how its supposed to be.

Routing through both the cooler and the radiator is possible, however, if you don't do a lot of towing, may be overkill. Just utilizing the radiator is not enough in my opinion. So using an external cooler only may be a good balance if you're primarily interested in extending transmission life. I've dismantled a radiator from a manual Ranger before. The taps are there for the automatic, but the guts aren't present internally. Wouldn't suggest hooking it up unless you want a mess... =)

I would think running through the radiator would warm the trans up more quickly in colder weather.
