so i started digging in to my '79 d44, and it has no ring gear or carrier but just a pinion, and the pinion has 12 teeth. would anybody know what gear ratio this pinion belongs too? i know i should have the ring gear teeth to divide by, but i figured someone here might know that ratio a 12 tooth pinion belongs to..
thanks!

Clean up the gear end of it. The number is usually stamped into the gear. It may still be visible.

never seen it there. me and RSH done some multiplying and came up with a 3.50 ratio to match the 12 tooth pinion i have, and would require a 42 tooth ring gear (which i dont have) and thats the only combo i can come up with but as far as i knew, 3.50s never came in these axles, just 3.54 and 4.09 and neither of those gears worth with a 12 tooth pinion
this all confuses me alot

You can't just grab a random ring gear. The ring and pinion are a matched pair.

i know that. im doing through some ratios that will give me a full number for the ring gear because common sense says that you cant have (ex) 43.8 teeth on the ring gear. so the ratio that gives me a complete number for the ring gear (42) is 3.50. make sense?

3.50 was the standard gear in the 44. I've got a set in my garage.

yeah? ok well i guess thats what it is. i was told by someone that 3.54 are what was standard. thanks man

i know, we just did it that way taking as example the 4.10 gears i had.
the pinion has 10 teeth, so 4.10 multiplied by 10 gives 41 teeth for the ring, which is correct

and 3.50 was a "real" ratio for the D44 it matches the 3.50 9" gears.

And the other guy is correct, that pinion is scrap because it'll only work with ONE specific ring gear without self-destructing

Gears are "lapped together" in the factory..
