small block chevy question

hey guys i havea small block chevy out of an 88 silverado, does anyone know if this block its self is anydif from an older style carborated small block? im looking to build a mild motor for my grandprix but want to leave my 305 stock and just swap a new motor trans and rear into it (just something fun to drive)

a carb manifold will bolt right to it and work just fine. the exterior of the block/heads are identical but being a late '80s there is a very strong chance that it is the much more desirable "roller" block that came with a hydraulic roller camshaft, and the block has provisions for the roller lifters.

if for some reason a person wanted to smoke crack and do away with the roller lifters, the older style flat-tappet lifters slide in their place

it would also probably have a 1 piece rear main seal. so you would have to use the newer crank. also the valve cover bolts go through the center of the valve cover

its also probably a 2 bolt main since its a truck motor, and it might be a low-po engine. meaning its probably only 200 horse.

but if its a roller block it is worth building. the better block are the 0010 casting blocks because of the higher nickle content.

If using an older carbed manifold, aren't the holes near the throttle body/carb area drilled on a different angle?

no, only on the later '90s "vortec" style heads (the heads i have on my bii for example) the bolts go perfectly vertical as opposed to angled matching the angle of the heads

nope, earlier cranks can be used with a $20 "1 piece seal adaptor" but using a newer crank in an earlier block will not work

i used a late '80s tb truck motor as a replacement for an '06 reinell boat i had 3 years ago that came with a carb, i drummed up a carb manifold and it all worked fine
