Is anyone using a oil lube in there 4x4 M50D tranny, instead of ATF

Is anyone using motor oil in their Ranger's 4x4 M50D tranny, instead of ATF

Would using motor oil provide better lubrication in a Ranger's 4x4 M50D tranny, instead of using ATF

It seems I recall reading, before, that some people recommended and were using, either, 10/30w motor oil, or synthetic 10/30w motor oil in their Ranger's 4x4 M50D tranny for better lubrication, instead of using ATF

Would Mobil's Delvac 15/40w motor oil, or Rotella's 15/40w synthetic blend motor oil be too thick for using in a Ranger's 4x4 M50D manual tranny

Or, would it be better to use a Mobil 1 synthetic 10/30W motor oil, instead

Can regular 10/30w motor oil be used, too, for providing good tranny lubrication, rather than using synthetic oil

Makes it shift harder in cold weather. Actually, it's a little bit rougher shifting all the time. I tried running gear oil in one once, wasn't nearly as good as ATF. Dunno about motor oil though.

If your going to use engine oil, use a 0W20 or 0W15 full synthetic. ATF is pretty thin stuff, and the transmission is designed to run with really light oil. Running a thicker oil in one will cause much harder shifting and in some cases (if the oil is heavy enough) damage because the oil can't easily get to where it needs to go.

I have to agree ATF isnt expensive and it works good with atleast my trans

The tolerances in the 'modern' manual transmissions are much tighter than the older ones. Using a lubricant other than what it was designed for could likely damage the trans.

When I bought my M50D the company I got it from said that they wouldn't warranty it UNLESS I used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. Good stuff even though it smells like cat piss!

ATF is simply better in a trans application, why do you want to run oil?

I have switched other tranny's to ATF in the past, only reason I could see you wanting to run oil was A. you want ot change it more often B. you want to quiet down the grinding in the tranny so you can sell it.

That's pretty much it.

Motor oil is not designed for the "shearing friction" of running on helical gears

If you really want to run something "Better" try B&M's "trick shift" ATF.

THIN gear oil would likely be "ok" if and ONLY IF you are running a Hurst shifter.

Gear oil does not do kind things to the plastic shifter "springs"
and once these go to pieces there is a whole lotta small oil passages that can get plugged up

Because people think that the manufacturer's specs are a trick to make the vehicle not live as long so they can sell more of them.

But I agree with you. I get so frustrated seeing people ask "Can I do this thing that flies in the face of how it was designed?"

DO NOT run anything other than ATF in an M5OD. I found this one out the hard way. My truck has been whining very loudly lately, and the whole truck shudders at low speed. I discovered that I had gear oil in my tranny, so I put in ATF and within 100 miles it was driving better. The shuddering is almost gone, but it still whines a little. I've owned the truck for like 35k miles, so the oil was put in the transmission before that, and up until a couple weeks ago, it drove perfect. I'm still using the tranny, but it's going to the scrapyard next time I replace my clutch. I just hope it lasts all winter.

I was reading on "Bob is The Oil Guy", that many of the members from this website are saying that they have been using Redline MTL in their M50D transmissions.

And, it has made their trannys shift much better, run quieter, smoother, provides far superior lubrication, and they they like it's performance results a lot better than using ATF

I still don't get why anyone is advocating manual trans lube for a transmisssion that was designed to use ATF. Redline also markets a line of ATF and I'm sure they make one that would be more suitable for the M5OD that their MTL.
