Anybody ever run retreads on a 4x4 Ranger?

My local used tire shop has a phat set of 4 31 10 50 15's with an aggressive tread pattern, but they are retreads for $310.00 and he said the company guarantees them up to 30K miles. But I just don't know about running retreads on a passenger vehicle. And used 31's are scarce around here and new are outrageous! Thoughts comments? Thanks

Man, I would never run retreads...for a bit more you can get new tires with a full warranty and better life. My little sister ran retreads once and nearly lost her unborn child and her life. They were guaranteed as well. The right rear let go at only 600 miles of use and her Baja Bug went right off the road and into a ditch. Her right rear 'glass fender blew apart and that tire sheared right off the rim. For some reason she did not flip that bug!!! If she did she would have either died or lost that baby. I went with her when she bought those a/t tires. She said that is all she could afford at the time. My wife and I buiilt that bug for her and it was really sweet. You think they would replace that rear 'glass fender?? F*** NO!!! They said they would give her another tire but we had to pay to have it installed and balanced.......AHHHHHHHH!!!!

somewhere around 16k on my retreads from treadwright. absolutely no complaints about them.

I don't care how hard up for cash someone is, retreads are a bad idea. Losing a retread can make a mess out of sheetmetal in a heartbeat.
If you can't spare the coins, then just buy smaller tires.

In PA, retreads are illegal on the front axle of a taxi.

I run the retreads from treadwright also. I haven't has any issues with mine either. I'll probably buy from them again. They do really well.

I think there are two different types of retreads, one type that I wouldn't use which is simply a new strip of tread that is glued to the tire carcass.

The other type, which is what treadwright uses is to remold the tire using an existing tire with the old tread removed. If it's been explained correctly to me I think this is much safer method and something I would be willing to use.

The only laws regarding a re-tread on a passenger vehicle are mostly local ones. Only ones I know of to date that are somewhat universal are the steer axles of school busses (regular busses too for that matter) and I think some semi's also aren't supposed to run them on the steer axle. Otherwise re-treads are good on all the other positions.

But our little trucks don't see anywhere near those kinds of stresses or miles, and are fine to run on whatever.

Old retreads suck, new retreads are pretty good.

Thanks guys! Strvgr I'm gonna check those out too. Azhrei sent you a pm. The one's this guy had had crap all over the side walls, are they normally like that? Like melted rubber. Kinda looked like they had been on a truck for a day and had rash on the side walls but still had the molding on the treads?

Nothing wrong with retreads as long as they are properly made and properly inflated.

if you run them at too low of a pressure, they will head up and blow the cap.

of course, i had some firestones on my steer tires ones, blew the cap like a retread, but they were brand new tires, figure that one out.
