Parking brake

I have a 94 ranger and to apply my parking brake I feel like i am about to push the peddle through the floor how do I go about tightening it. Any help would be nice

Get a Haynes or Chilton manual, the parking brake system is talked about in there. I fixed mine. Start spraying w-d40 now, the adjuster is drivers side, just behind cab along outside of frame.

If a 94 is anything like a 93, the parking brake adjustment is made at the parking brake pedal. There is a spring loaded pawl that sets the cable tension. It turned out to be a bad design as the pawl would slip and the cable would release its tension. There was a Service Bulletin released on the matter, the fix was to insert a plastic wedge to lock the pawl in place. They put one in mine when the truck was about a month old, it broke a few years back and no more were available. I had to carve one out of a chunk of fiberglass. The text of the TSB is...

Defect Summary: THE PARKING BRAKE CONTROL SELF-ADJUST PAWL DOES NOT LINE UP PROPERLY WITH THE SELF-ADJUST RACHET CAUSING THE PAWL TO SLIP OVER ONE OR MORE TEETH IN THE RACHET.

Consequence Summary: WHEN THE ABOVE OCCURS, IT CAN RESULT IN PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM INEFFECTIVENESS. THE PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ROLL FREELY, IF THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT LEFT IN GEAR.

Corrective Summary: A WEDGE WILL BE INSTALLED WHICH WILL SERVE TO LOCK THE PARKING BRAKE SELF-ADJUST MECHANISM PAWL INTO ENGAGEMENT WITH THE RACHET. ALSO, OWNERS WILL BE ADVISED TO RELEASE AND REAPPLY THE PARKING BRAKE WHENEVER TOOTH SKIP OCCURS AND WILL BE REMINDED TO ALWAYS TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND LEAVE THE VEHICLE IN GEAR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED.

move up adjust sleeve inside the drum and spray grease/lube mecanism under the box driver side and in cab

+1 I used to have a Chilton manual regarding how to install a Performance Chip but I was a total noob back then so a friend advised me to switch to Haynes as they have more detailed solutions there, on account of pictures and constant notes.

However my truck has a similar symptom but it was manufactured on 10/94, so this does not apply. I verified this by visually inspecting my parking brake assembly and found it to be a slightly different design than what is shown in the link above; I have the "Cam-in-post" design.

Now I am on a mission to find out if the self adjustment mechanism is operating correctly with my "newer" style parking break. More research is required before I understand how that mechanism is supposed to work and whether mine is functioning correctly or not.
