my son just bought a 1988 ranger high rider and all the front end components need to be replaced. Can I use standard coil springs and shocks, ball joints, tie rods, etc or do they have to be High Rider specific. If so, where can I go to get these parts.

Thanks,

David

i had to use f150 shocks on mine as the standard 4x4 shock was too short. the stx coils are also taller

i'd try doing a thread search in the different forums here for your son's truck and check out all the different problems, fixes, mods, etc. also take a look in the tech library and see what will apply to the High Rider model.

You def need the longer springs and shocks to match the suspension travel. Its the high rider because it rides higher than stock. But hte f150 spring idea would prolly work for you. Its longer than stock.

napa sells the coil springs for the stx highrider.

if you can't find the STX springs get leveling springs, they should be the same length or close enough, don't use F150 springs or it'll ride like a brick (even more so than stock)

other than the pivot brackets, front shocks, front springs and radius arm crossmember the rest of the front end parts are the same as a normal ranger

Skyjacker's 132x coil spring for TTB Rangers will work in place of the STX highrider spring....and they ride nicely.

Isn't it a 2wd F-150 shock that works? It's like 1.5" longer?

Heckethorn makes shocks for the Highrider, at least they use to.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help. From the research I have done, I think the truck is a factory "high rider". It has the riveted parts andcrossmenber that people talk about and have pictures of. I know nothing about trucks.....Start throwing the tomatoes.....I am a Japanese luxury sedan guy, but this has been kind of fun so far. He is having a blast in the thing and we are learning together.

We won't do that. We'll just go right for the heavy artilery: watermelons and engine blocks.

This is a warning. But ones you get addicted to Rangers, you find out what their true potential is.
