Need some opinions. I have a 96 2wd Ranger with a 2.3 and a 5 spd.The has 128,000 miles on it and runs just fine on level ground but if your up any type of hill the truck bogs down real bad.I have seafoam the intake and some in the tank. I have change plugs and wires. O2 sensors have been replace.It still has the stock exhaust and I am going replace that as soon as I decide on a muffler.Any thoughts anyone?

Its most likely a problem with your emissions system causing a bad air/fuel ratio. Either EGR or MAF, TPS anything like that sensor related on the intake side. I would check that your cats not clogged, but its doubtful. And maybe have your 02 sensor checked as well, its a big list, but one by one youll figure it out. I also recommend taking apart the uper intake and hand cleaning those components, even seafoam works awesome, but it wont get all the caked up stuff in the TPS and throttle body. Carbon buildup sneaks up on you.

Downshift

That works for me. & my 4-banger has to pull the added weight of a t-case & front diff.

Gotta drive it more efficently. Plan your moves before you make them. And when all else fails, downshift and let the gears do their part. For me, each gear holds about 25mph (1st~25mph, 2nd~50mph, 3rd~75mph, 4th~100mph<-haven't gone that fast).

In normal driving for me, I use OD at any speed above 45 mph. I usually short-shift 1-2-3, and go into 4th about 25-30 mph.

I live in a hilly area, and while I do have a V6, its an old one, and its starting to feel it's age.

I prefer to long-shift 1 through 3, short 4th, and stay out of OD until I get to 55.

Uphill I stay in 4th, go WOT, and the one hill I try to hit at 65.

Whatever works. We're different people with different trucks. What i do is how my truck likes to be driven.

drive it like you stole it, the 2.3 will live a long life no matter what you do to it assuming you keep oil in it... it'll run it's whole life at 6000rpm if you want it to, it doesn't care... the torque peak is at 2600rpm, HP peak around 4600rpm, to pull hills best pull them at or above 4600rpm, your best gas mileage will be around 2600rpm.

downshifting is your friend, most people don't get that, the rev limiter is at 6000-6200rpm, you won't be able to hurt it unless there's a check engine light on or it's making funny noises.

Maybe that's why mine like cruising at 75 mph on the highway so much. It's turning about 3,000 revs, which means it's smack in the middle of hp & torque peaks.

Have you changed the fuel filter? If you put seafoam in the tank you need to change it after you run the seafoam out of the tank.

clean the fuel filter.. do fluids if you havent.. and downshift and rev the shit out of it! my 95 2.3 five speed loved it!
