Engine covers?

4.0ls have engine covers.

I think the covers are used more to keep crap off the top of the engine. On some of the 4 cylinder motors that have the plugs right on top the motor i would think that water would accumulate around the spark plugs.

On some KIA or Hyundai, I can't remember which, but it's one of those junk Korean SUV's, the motor is mounted sideways and it's FWD, but the engine cover is shaped to make the motor look like a V8 with a Corvette LS1 style intake manifold, and it makes the motor look like it's mounted like a rwd car. When I saw that it took me a minute to figure out what I was even looking at.

Here is the car I have (not mine in the image, but it takes a hand to hold up my hood, the shocks that normally do it have worn out over time and need replaced).

Its not like these new ones. Doesn't cover the entire engine bay.

yea i just servised a fulley loaded 94' explorer and all it has is a manifold cover nothin major

my favorite covers to make fun of are the LS corvette "valve covers" when you open the hood it looks like a huge engine but pull the covers off and it has tiny valve covers, with coils bolted to the top of'em.

I had to deal with an Acura MDX the other day that had a full engine cover, but it was one of the better ones I've had to mess with. You just pull up on it and it unclips.

Now if you really want to complain about engine covers/splash guards, go look up the oil change procedure for a Ford GT. 2 hours, 5 skid plates, and half the car later you can access the drain plug.

I thought maybe they are supposed to reduce engine noise, or direct airflow, but if your in stopped traffic, will you not just trap hot air over the intake manifold?

Dont remember what car it was on, but when I worked changing oil (8-10 years ago) I remember seeing one where a removable plastic cover formed part of the radiator fan shroud, and it actually had a little warning stamped in it about putting it back on for proper cooling. It didn't actually cover the engine, but it would have been totally unnecessary and the underhood area would have been 10x more serviceable if they had just used a normal fan shroud.

Another thing these covers may be used for is pedestrian safety. Didn't affect trucks and SUV's much but a lot of cars around 2006 came out with new bodystyles because of pedestrian safety regulations requiring certain measures be taken to soften the blow of a pedestrian striking the hood. Many just raised the hood and lowered the engine to put more space there for the hood to absorb impact energy as it crushed, but a plastic cover, if properly designed, could serve a similar purpose.

yeah, but some go so over the top that they literally cover EVERYTHING except the oil dipstick and filler

i just did a timing belt on an audi quattro.. i've seen worse covers though

Look up a 2007 lexus es350 it covers EVERYTHING even the engine.

Yea i was going to metion that i saw those cars before they did the press relese on'em being that i work for Honda of america we get to see the preproduction cars first. if i bought on i would remove all the crap but i don;t really like the exterior of the TLs anyways.

It could be worse. Imagine opening up a hood just to find another hood underneath, except plastic.
